Dreaming of Old Big Ears

I have taken this walk many times before, since I was a kid. Up the Anfield Road and then along the back alleys to the corner of the Kop. Its in the quietness of the alley way that I get nervouse but I've probably not been this nervous before. Sure, we are leading and have 2 precious away goals but we're facing Barcelona. The European Champions that boast in their ranks the European player of the year amongst a host of fleet footed attacking talent - if any team is going to score its this one - the question is 'how many?' The quietness of those alleys quickly gives way to the hustle and bustle around the Stadium. My nerves are replaced by anticipation - I'm here to witness a European night at Anfield and sample the atmosphere of the Kop - that on nights like these is possibly the best place to be in all the world. I was not dissapointed. The songs were sung for the whole night - 'Fields of Anfield Rd', 'Old Scouser Tommy','L-I-V-E-R-P-O-O-L', the Rafa Benitez Song, 'We won it five times', 'When the Reds go marching in', 'Steve Gerrard Gerrard', 'Ring of Fire' and of course 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. Ok so we lost a game that we should have wrapped up in the first half and usually in these cases you go home gutted but not tonight. The game ended and 'YNWA' was sung - the Barca fans joined in and then probably the best moment of the night, the whole of Anfield began to chant 'Barca' This is the way football should be celebrated. We had witnessed some great skill of Ronaldinho and Messi but in the end Carra and chums had nullified most of their sting. Oh how I wish that this run would end up in Ancient Greece with old big ears. Bring on the next round
